About

Hi my name is Amber (pronouns: Her/She)

I am a qualified Psychotherapeutic counselor offering short and long-term therapy options in person in the North West of England, and for people across the world online or via the phone. I am experienced in working with neuro-divergent people and people all along the LGBTQ+ spectrum, my room is a safe confidential and non-judgemental environment for my clients to use as they like. I have found that each client has their own individual needs and their own life views when struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, bereavement, relationship issues and big life changes. And there is no one way for individuals to find growth.  My aim is to help my clients along their unique path to self-actualization.

Often, people will find coping mechanisms that help them survive in difficult situations.  This happens a lot in childhood when we are fairly helpless.  These coping mechanisms serve us well until ….well until they don’t anymore.  But, as creatures of habit, these coping mechanisms don’t just go away.  We use them over and over, despite the fact that better reactions and more evolved coping mechanisms are now available to us.  Having someone to explore different opportunities to employ better coping mechanisms is sometimes all it takes to become more of the person they want to be.

By exploring who a person is and who they want to be, we can find reason, empathy, and opportunity to grow.  People can take a more active approach to shaping their present and future by making the conscious choice to work through difficulties.

THE WAY I WORK

As a psychotherapist, much of the work will be in the subconscious.  What are your unconscious expectations about your relationships, the people above or below you?  Which thoughts or feelings about yourself are actually yours, and which did you learn from your parents or friends?  Who would you be if you could separate from everything your family, culture, religion, and world have dictated for you?  Without pressure, overt or subtle, what would make you happy?  And why would it make you happy?

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE FIRST SESSION

The first session is more like an informal interview than a therapy session.  In these 20 minutes, I will ask questions such as what brought you to therapy, and why now?  I may ask about your childhood or about your current living situation.  I will also invite you to ask any questions you may have.  We will discuss confidentiality, punctuality, payment, and a few other practical matters.

For some, the idea of therapy may be daunting, especially for first-timers who may not know what it entails, or may have doubts about whether therapy can actually help them.   As such, I generally recommend an evaluation period of three weeks.  After three sessions, both parties will have a better idea about each other and whether they feel that productive work could happen between them.  After this period, we would decide if we are both happy to move forward with further sessions.  It can also be an opportunity to discuss how comfortable you feel in a therapy setting.
